Heather began her early art studies interested in oil painting. After applying to several art colleges, she was awarded free tuition from either the San Francisco Art Institute with the Presidential Scholarship, or the Hearst Foundation Scholarship from Pacific Northwest College of Art. Portland being the more affordable of the two cities, PNCA won out.
The fantastic intermedia program at PNCA heavily informed Redetzke’s approach to art making. Her BFA was technically earned with a specialization in painting, yet she spent her final two years devouring information on installations, soundscapes, performance art, digital media, video works, and especially, public art. These intermedia studies culminated in her thesis project : an installation designed to educate the viewers about issues around modern food production, and it included a community building barbeque.
As a professional intermedia artist, Redetzke’s works are frequently site specific installations in parks and neighborhoods. Themes in these installations tend to revolve around social issues and community building. Examples of these installations include: Posters, which was installed in Cathedral Park in St. Johns, OR during the annual Blues Festival, Bad Things, Bad Thoughts, Bad Dreams, installed in The Cubbi at PNCA in Portland, OR, and This Is Not Natural, a temporary installation at Mill Race Park in Eugene, OR.
In addition to these community based art projects, Redetzke has had several prestigious gallery exhibitions. She has been curated by Stuart Horodner and Saul Ostrow into the Transient Decor (on the road again) exhibition at the Affair At The Jupiter Hotel in Portland, OR , she was juried into the Let Live art auction at Merrimac Studios in Portland, OR by curator Chad Miller, she has exhibited at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center in Atlanta, GA, and will exhibit at Quality Pictures Contemporary Art, Portland OR in February 2008.
